The Northern Indian Ocean is defined for tropical cyclone tracking purposes as that area north of 0 degrees and west of 115 degrees east. The area has been divided into the Bay of Bengal originating cyclones and those first tracked in the Arabian Sea. The Bay of Bengal encompasses the area north of 0 degrees, and between 115 and 80 degress east. The Arabian Sea is that area north of 0 degrees and west of 80 dregrees to the African continent. The average number of tropical cyclones that form in this region of the world is . The mean is . The tracks used here begin in 1945 and extend through 1997.
